Joan Zaretsky, Ph.D.

Joan has been an educator for the past 32 years, serving as a classroom teacher, vice-principal, principal, Language Arts Consultant, and Curriculum Coordinator for Junior Kindergarten to Grade 13 in Ontario. For the past 12 years, she has served as a Professional Issues Staff Officer with the Manitoba Teachers’ Society.  Joan has completed her Principals’ Certification in both Manitoba and Ontario as well as her Superintendents’ Qualifications in Ontario.   Her academic qualifications include a Masters in Education (Educational Administration) and in 2011, her Doctorate (Inclusive Special Education).  She won a national award, the Thomas B. Greenfield Award, for her dissertation, entitled “Perspectives of Northern Manitoba Principals Regarding New Special Education Legislation”.

Joan has delivered workshops at conferences sponsored by the Canadian Teachers’ Federation, the International Council for Exceptional Children, the Canadian Association for the Study of Educational Administration, The American Educational Research Association, and the Canadian Association of Community Living, as well as a wide variety of workshops for members of the Manitoba Teachers’ Society.  As part of her doctoral field studies, Joan developed a study group kit entitled “Building an Inclusive School: A Facilitation Kit for School Principals” which she is currently in the process of publishing.

Joan is a lead author of Profiling Inclusive Cultures in Schools (PICS), a self-assessment instrument for improving inclusive education. PICS helps school communities to: learn more about inclusive education, assess their current strengths and weaknesses, and set concrete directions for improvement. During the 2012/13 school year, PICS is being piloted in River East Transcona School Division in Winnipeg.
