Literature Reviews, Outcomes Comparisons, Other Research
Consultant: Joan Zaretsky, Ph.D.
Joan has had unique experiences requiring her to review literature. As the writer of a weekly column, “The School Question Corner,” in the Kenora Miner and News for 7 years, Joan researched responses to questions posed by parents, teachers and community members. As the host of a weekly show, “Classroom Connections,” on the local Kenora television for 2 years, she researched different topics and invited various Kenora educators to participate in discussion of new educational approaches and programs. Her formal research skills were developed with her university coursework and writing for her Master and Doctoral degrees. Both her Master thesis and Doctoral dissertation required extensive research reviews and collation of findings.
In her university courses, Joan developed skills in reviewing literature, establishing themes and findings, and drawing defensible conclusions. She completed extensive reviews and written papers in many topics including:
- the role of the principal in promoting inclusive school cultures,
- provincial studies reviewing special education practices,
- provincial legislation developments over time regarding the implementation of Equality rights and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms,
- effective professional development/learning strategies across the professions (reviewing 750 articles from 2 journals over a 10 year span in each of education, nursing, and medicine).
If you have a topic you wish to have studied and want a background paper developed to support your future direction, she is skilled in presenting you with an organized foundation upon which to base decisions.
